5 risk rules every prop firm trader needs
Strategy gets you to the target; risk management keeps you in the game long enough to reach it. These five rules protect your account on every phase.
Why risk management decides most challenges
A prop firm challenge gives you a profit target and two loss limits. Because you usually have more room on the target side (for example 10%) than on the daily side (5%), a single uncontrolled day can undo weeks of good trading. The five rules below are simple, but applied together they remove the most common reasons traders fail.
Rule 1 — Risk a fixed, small percentage per trade
Decide your risk per trade before you open the platform and keep it fixed: 0.5% to 1% of the starting balance is a sensible range for most evaluations. Calculate the position size from the distance to your stop-loss, not from how confident you feel. Our position size calculator does the math for you.
Rule 2 — Set a personal daily stop well inside the firm’s limit
If the maximum daily loss is 5%, stop trading for the day at −2% to −2.5%. The firm’s limit is a wall; your personal stop is the guard rail that keeps you away from it. Revenge trading after a loss is the single most common way challenges end.
Rule 3 — Watch correlation and total open risk
EUR/USD, GBP/USD and the dollar index often move together. Three “separate” 1% trades in correlated pairs can behave like one 3% trade. Add up the risk of every open position and keep the total within your daily stop.
Rule 4 — Aim for steady days, not one big day
Funded accounts usually have a consistency rule — at Capifront no single day may account for more than 40% of the profit in a payout period. Building the habit during the evaluation pays off later. A smooth equity curve is also a sign that your risk is under control.
Rule 5 — Write a plan and follow it
Write down which markets you trade, your setups, your risk per trade, your daily stop and the times you trade. Review every trade in a trading journal — your Capifront dashboard includes one. A written plan turns decisions into rules, and rules are what the evaluation is testing.
Putting it together
On a $100,000 challenge with a 10% target, risking 1% per trade with a 2:1 reward-to-risk ratio means you need roughly five net winning trades to pass — there is no need to rush. Read the full trading rules first, then choose your evaluation on the pricing page.
